A Friend in Focus: Franz Wagner

Franz Wagner: Die Menschen.

Thomas Biebl: Was wurde bereits erreicht?

The Sound of Music“-Bild hinausgeht.

Franz Wagner: Eine einzigartige.

A Conversation with Franz Wagner, Owner of Ulf Englich Jewelry and Ambassador of the Friends of Schloss Leopoldskron

Thomas Biebl: Franz, how did your personal connection to Schloss Leopoldskron begin?

Franz Wagner: It was a stroke of luck. In the 1980s, I discovered the biography of Gusti Adler at a flea market – along with a little treasure, The Chinese Nightingale. Gusti Adler was Max Reinhardt’s longtime assistant, his closest collaborator, holding together both the artistic and organizational threads. She was there when Leopoldskron became a cultural meeting place of international renown. That book opened the door to this very special world for me – and since then, Leopoldskron has never let me go.

Thomas Biebl: What do you feel when you enter the palace today?

Franz Wagner: Joy – and wonder, every single time. This place has a magic that cannot be explained. You can feel history, beauty, and spirit merge into a single whole. It’s as if you are stepping into another world.

Thomas Biebl:  What inspired you to become involved with the Friends of Schloss Leopoldskron?

Franz Wagner: Leopoldskron is a cultural treasure that must be preserved. For me, it’s a matter of the heart to protect and care for this place, to safeguard it for future generations – and perhaps also to bring back a touch of the original splendor from Max Reinhardt’s time.

Thomas Biebl: Since the founding in December 2024, quite a lot has happened. What developments have been the most meaningful for you?

Franz Wagner: The garden project gives me particular joy. The park is coming back to life, becoming more beautiful, more diverse – it’s regaining its own distinct character. At the same time, we have begun restoring the historic rooms. The goal is to make the fine elegance, the love of detail, and the aura of the palace visible again.

Thomas Biebl: Is there a project that is especially close to your heart?

Franz Wagner: Oh yes – the Venetian Salon and also the hotel suites. Each room has its own history and character. Preserving that character while gently renewing it is something very special to me.

Thomas Biebl: What makes the Friends of Schloss Leopoldskron so valuable to you?

Franz Wagner: The people. We share an enthusiasm for this place, and only together can we preserve it. The Friends are more than just supporters – they are a circle of people who share a vision.

Thomas Biebl: What has already been achieved?

Franz Wagner: We have opened Leopoldskron – to Salzburg, to Austria, to the world. Visitors here experience something that goes beyond the familiar image from The Sound of Music. They encounter a palace that is alive, inspiring, and connecting.

Thomas Biebl: What role does Leopoldskron play for Salzburg and beyond?

Franz Wagner: A unique one. Just as the Salzburg Festival is incomparable, so too is Leopoldskron – through its location, its history, and its aura. It is a place that connects people across borders.

Thomas Biebl: How can people best get involved?

Franz Wagner: With ideas, time, passion, and of course, through financial support. Every contribution, whether large or small, matters. True preservation is only possible together.

Thomas Biebl: Do you have a wish for the future of the palace?

Franz Wagner: Yes. That people from all over the world will come to feel this magic. That they will understand what a gift Leopoldskron is – and become part of its story.
